6 Indelible Ways to Build Your Ebenezer

“Dear, did you see where I put the keys to our cabinet?” (an embarrassing question I usually ask my husband).

“Mommy, where is the pair of earrings you just gave me? I forgot where I placed it.” (another embarrassing query I used to ask my mom when I was single.)

These were my usual questions to those who are dear to me–the people who have known me fully.

It’s funny how I easily forget stuff. It should be forgivable since I have had a few minor surgeries and researchers say that pain killers such as anaesthesia can weaken one’s memory. Now, I have a good excuse. 🙂

This then explains why I am a person who likes keeping diaries. I like keepsakes. I have also known people who are good at remembering things not because they have sharp memories but they are smart enough to keep journals, planners and organizers.

While contemplating on my reading from 1 Samuel 7 months ago, I was moved by how Samuel led the Israelites to a worship ceremony because of God’s deliverance of them in the face of their enemy–the Philistines.

“Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’” 1 Samuel 7:12

Why did Samuel name the stone Ebenezer? Ebenezer literally means “the stone of help.”  He set that up to help Israel remember God’s help for them achieve victory over their enemy. Then it hit me.

Now, what are the six indelible ways we can do to build our Ebenezer? Let me share with you my list.

1. Write a journal.

Your journal doesn’t have to be expensive. You can utilize unused planners. In my case, I am delighted to receive spare planners each year and use them as my journal.

Reviewing in our journal what God has done helps us stay encouraged to trust Him continually.

2. Write a blog.

There are many free sites you can choose from. There’s wordpress, blogger, weebly and many other options. One good thing about keeping a journal is you can easily transfer this to your blog. Just choose the ones that you want to write in public.

Writing a blog has blessed me massively. I have been given opportunities to meet fellow bloggers (virtually!) who also love the God I love.

Who knows that the next person to visit your blog is someone who is in need of the gospel or the encouragement you just wrote from your Bible reading or testimony? Let’s grab this opportunity for God’s glory! 🙂 Feel free to browse the web on how to get your blog started.

3. Write poems/lyrics for a hymn.

I am not a gifted composer but may be you are a gifted one. Turn your testimonies to songs that remind you of God’s guidance, answer to your prayers, and whatever He leads you to write about.

How many times have I been encouraged by the music I have listened to on Abiding Radio. Perhaps, you’re the next contemporary hymn writer your church is looking for.

4. Write a Facebook post.

I am blessed to see many friends of mine sharing their blessings on Facebook. Facebook, indeed, is a good avenue to testify of God’s work in our lives. We just have to make sure that all credits go to our God, ultimately. 🙂

5. Buy a souvenir.

This may be a little bit weird. I know that some people are very sentimental that for every accomplishment they achieve, they buy something valuable to remind them of God’s favor. There’s nothing wrong with that. I think it’s an incredibly cool idea!

“Well, I don’t have such an amount of money Sis. Nance.” How about literally collecting even small stones and writing something on them with a marker and keeping them altogether in one clear jar to remind you of God’s deliverance from your long-time struggles? Why not? 🙂

It’s still up to you but I believe that keeping even a small token is a good reminder of God’s goodness. Later, our kids or friends will ask us what those tokens are about and we can testify about God’s loving kindness upon us! Isn’t it neat?

6. Take photos.

We have so many blessings in this computer age. We have an enormous number of available gadgets which can help us retain memories and one of them is our cameras! Let’s take photos of God’s unspeakable gifts! Share them with our friends and encourage them to love, seek and worship the God that we love as well!

What are the other ways you use to remind you of God’s working in your life? I would love to know them!

  1. I used to keep a journal, but now that I am blogging it doesn’t happen as much. It’s amazing though how something so simple can be such a window to those times past. I love having it to go back and look through because it keeps those memories so fresh.

  2. I didn’t know ebenezer meant that. I did just read that passage a few weeks ago. How interesting! I blog which has really blessed my walk (even if I don’t have a large readership yet) and I started keeping a prayer notebook in my “war room” so I can focus my prayers but also be able to see how God has worked in the lives of those around me.

  3. Some lovely ideas…I blog and post on facebook and I do enjoy journaling when I remember. I’ve not thought about songs before but I have done poetry in the past, so maybe time to revisit it!

  4. I love this. That scripture I haven’t noticed before. I have a journal as well as a blog. Sunday during church is the day that I write what God has been speaking to me during the week. I have toddlers and pregnant so this is a time that I have child care and I can be sure to record something. Sometimes I am able to do it other times like right before bed, but at least Sundays I know it will happen. I love going back and reading old journals. Our journey and relationship with God is the sweetest we will have in this life.

  5. For years and years I would journal about the good, bad, and ugly in my life. I stopped several years ago, but I still have all of those old journals. I love looking back through them. This is confirmation that I need to start back journaling again. Thanks for sharing!

  6. These are great! I love keeping a journal, and I have for years. I’ve had many people compliment me on my memory, but it is only because the act of writing things down help them stay in my brain and memory. What a great gift the Lord gave you with these insights!

  7. What great ideas! I think that journaling and/or writing a blog are good, important ways to pass what we have learned on to the next generation, as well! We are responsible for our own story!

  8. I have always loved that portion of Scripture about the Ebenezer stone. We so need to remember. And you are right … I started my blog so that when I am gone, my children & grandchildren will know what I was thinking each day.
I think this was my first time visiting you so, “Nice to meet you!” Blessings!

  9. Ebenezer stones have long been precious to me. I use my journal and now have my blog to record how far the Lord has lead us and the wonders He has done along the way. So glad to connect with you through Reflect Link-up. Your words are a blessing, as are you.

  10. Love it. I made a pretty jar a few years ago and we write down thing God has dine and stick in there. I was trying to find a way to link back to you since I added my post to your linkup, but I can’t seem to find it.

  11. I’ve never really been a journal person myself. But I love that your FB suggestion. I am always encouraged when people share blessing after blessing that the Lord has bestowed on them. It’s such an uplifting thing for me to see.

  12. I kind of switch between journaling and my blog. I haven’t had the nerve to post my prayer journaling on my blog just yet, but it’s a great way to remember the wonderful things God has done! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  13. I use to love diaries. Now, as a mom with less time, I love to scrapbook my memories. It is still time consuming, but as long as we all find our favorite way to keep memories and praise God for all He has done, that’s what counts. Great ideas!
