“Dear, did you see where I put the keys to our cabinet?” (an embarrassing question I usually ask my husband).
“Mommy, where is the pair of earrings you just gave me? I forgot where I placed it.” (another embarrassing query I used to ask my mom when I was single.)
These were my usual questions to those who are dear to me–the people who have known me fully.
It’s funny how I easily forget stuff. It should be forgivable since I have had a few minor surgeries and researchers say that pain killers such as anaesthesia can weaken one’s memory. Now, I have a good excuse. 🙂
This then explains why I am a person who likes keeping diaries. I like keepsakes. I have also known people who are good at remembering things not because they have sharp memories but they are smart enough to keep journals, planners and organizers.
While contemplating on my reading from 1 Samuel 7 months ago, I was moved by how Samuel led the Israelites to a worship ceremony because of God’s deliverance of them in the face of their enemy–the Philistines.
“Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’” 1 Samuel 7:12
Why did Samuel name the stone Ebenezer? Ebenezer literally means “the stone of help.” He set that up to help Israel remember God’s help for them achieve victory over their enemy. Then it hit me.
Now, what are the six indelible ways we can do to build our Ebenezer? Let me share with you my list.
1. Write a journal.
Your journal doesn’t have to be expensive. You can utilize unused planners. In my case, I am delighted to receive spare planners each year and use them as my journal.
Reviewing what God has done through our records in our journal helps encouraged by God’s hand upon our endeavors for Him.
2. Write a blog.
There are many free sites you can choose from. There’s wordpress, blogger, weebly and many other options. One good thing about keeping a journal is you can easily transfer this to your blog. Just choose the ones that you want to write in public.
Writing a blog has blessed me massively. I have been given opportunities to meet fellow bloggers who also love the God I love.
Who knows that the next person to visit your blog is someone who is in need of the gospel or the encouragement you just wrote from your Bible reading or testimony? Let’s grab this opportunity for God’s glory! 🙂 Feel free to browse the web on how to get your blog started.
3. Write poems/lyrics for a hymn.
I am not a gifted composer but may be you are a gifted one. Turn your testimonies to songs that remind you of God’s guidance, answer to your prayers, and whatever He leads you to write about.
How many times have I been encouraged by the music I have listened to on Abiding Radio. Perhaps, you’re the next contemporary hymn writer your church is looking for.
4. Write a Facebook post.
I am blessed to see many friends of mine sharing their blessings on Facebook. Facebook, indeed, is a good avenue to testify of God’s work in our lives. We just have to make sure that all credits go to our God, ultimately. 🙂
5. Buy a souvenir.
This may be a little bit weird. I know that some people are very sentimental that for every accomplishment they achieve, they buy something valuable to remind them of God’s favor. There’s nothing wrong with that. I think it’s an incredibly cool idea!
“Well, I don’t have such an amount of money Sis. Nance.” How about literally collecting even small stones and writing something on them with a marker and keeping them altogether in one clear jar to remind you of God’s deliverance from your long-time struggles? Why not? 🙂
It’s still up to you but I believe that keeping even a small token is a good reminder of God’s goodness. Later, our kids or friends will ask us what those tokens are about and we can testify about God’s loving kindness upon us! Isn’t it neat?
6. Take photos.
We have so many blessings in this computer age. We have an enormous number of available gadgets which can help us retain memories and one of them is our cameras! Let’s take photos of God’s unspeakable gifts! Share them with our friends and encourage them to love, seek and worship the God that we love as well!
What are the other ways you use to remind you of God’s working in your life? I would love to know them!
